The Summit

Innovative use of data will be the key to unlocking the mysteries of the credentialing marketplace and enabling students, workers, employers, and other stakeholders make more informed decisions about credentials and their content, meaning, and value. Better access to and use of credential data is necessary to power our education and workforce systems into the next century. To tackle these issues, we must pool the ideas and talents of our best and brightest.

This invite-only event will bring together technologists, developers, designers, and other stakeholders to demonstrate what innovations and ideas are possible with Credential Registry data. Join Credential Engine and event partner Learning Tapestry for two days of moving ideas into action by envisioning and prototyping applications and data services that will change how students, workers, employers, and educators engage with credential data. The Summit will also help identify the next steps for engaging and supporting this community moving forward.

Supported by JP Morgan Chase & Co., the Credential Registry Learn and Build Summit in the Washington, DC metro area is the first in a series of three regional events that will advance Credential Engine’s open application marketplace and grow the community of practitioners working with Registry data to build applications, tools, and products. Planning is underway for two additional events that will take place in different parts of the country in 2019.

Summit Goals

The following Summit goals have been drafted in close collaboration with participants and other key stakeholders. This list may evolve as we gather more feedback from potential participants in the weeks leading up to the event. Summit Goals:

1. Envision and develop application solutions and data services that enable Credential Registry data to be utilized in new ways to solve real-world problems.
2. Identify opportunities for scaling the open applications marketplace with an emphasis on user groups that will benefit most from the data (i.e. veterans, youth, small business).
3. Establish a deeper understanding and shared vision of what innovations are possible with Credential Registry data.
4. Collaborate with community members and strategic partners to propel technology development and the publishing of credential data in CTDL.
5. Surface priorities and next steps for supporting and growing the community of practitioners working with Credential Registry data.

Yes, we encourage you to share this event with individuals that would be interested in participating. Please keep in mind that we have a limited number of seats available, so please share with those that would be most interested and have the potential to add the most value.

What is included with my registration?

All participants will be provided with a software development kit to enable hands-on work during the event. Facilitators will also be available throughout the event to provide expertise on both the Credential Registry and the business cases being tackled.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided both days.

VisArts is located three blocks from the Rockville Metro station on the Red Line. Exit the Metro and follow the signs to Rockville Town Square. Cross Route 355 and head west on East Middle Lane. Walk two blocks and turn right on Gibbs Street. VisArts is located at the end of Gibbs Street on the right-hand side in the Arts and Innovation Center – 155 Gibbs.

Parking

We will provide you with validated parking tickets upon request. Please let us know during check-in each morning if you will need a validated parking ticket. IMPORTANT: these are only good for Garages A, B, and C ONLY.

Please note that to get to Garage B you will pass an entrance for the Rockville Metro Parking Garage. Do NOT park in this garage. If you park there you will receive a yellow ticket and will not be eligible for the validated parking ticket.

If you are traveling by local transportation, such as Metro, taxi, or rideshare (Lyft, Uber), we can reimburse these costs to and from the event only up to $35/day per Credential Engine travel expense guidelines.

About the Facilitator

Allen Gunn is Executive Director of Aspiration (www.aspirationtech.org) in San Francisco, USA, and works to help NGOs, activists, foundations and software developers make more effective use of technology for social change.

Gunn has worked in numerous technology environments from NGO to Silicon Valley start-up to college faculty to large corporation, serving in senior management, engineering, teaching and volunteer roles. He is an experienced facilitator with a passion for designing collaborative open learning processes, and he believes in melding hard work with serious fun.

Prior to his role at Aspiration, he served as Chief Tech Organizer for The Ruckus Society, and prior to that he was co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Pensare, an eLearning dotgone. He has served as senior software engineer at firms including Novell, NetManage, and a number of startups, and has shepherded large software projects through all stages of development, from inception, design, engineering, and testing to deployment, support and marketing, in environments ranging from start-up to large corporation to nonprofit.
