What if the 37 million Americans with some college but no degree could access high-quality job opportunities based on what they know, not just whether they have a degree?

At Credential Engine and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), we’re changing the way people think about education and employment, shifting the focus from credentials earned to skills gained. And you can help!

Watch our GitLab Foundation’s Demo 2025, where we share our vision for a future where all learning counts and skills are visible for the 37 million Americans with some college but no degree.

How it works:

We’re leveraging AI and open data to translate courses, transcripts, and non-degree credentials into structured skill profiles that are matched to jobs. These profiles are machine-readable, portable, and show what people know, so that they can get the most value out of skills gained in college and beyond.

Why this matters:

  • Millions of people have gained valuable knowledge and skills in college courses, but they do not have a degree. Consequently, they earn $40,000 a year less, on average, than people with a degree.
  • Skills profiles help people recognize and apply what they know and can do, so that they can differentiate themselves to get better jobs and advance on career pathways.

This is more than tech – it’s a movement toward transparency and opportunity in education and work.
