Why We’re Committed
Advance Vermont, in collaboration with Credential Engine, is connecting Vermonters with clear, easy-to-access information about postsecondary education credentials available in the state. The effort is giving residents vital information about education and training programs across Vermont, allowing them to make informed decisions about where to gain the knowledge, skills, and training that lead to high-pay, high-demand jobs. By mapping credential data using the Credential Transparency Description Language (CTDL) and publishing to Credential Engine’s national Registry, Advance Vermont is providing opportunity seekers with a way to understand and compare education and training programs and find the one that best fits their needs. For the first time, Vermonters have access to information about credentials in a format they can understand. Leaders in Vermont recognize that all stakeholders — learners, employers, education and training providers, and others — benefit when information about credentials is easily accessible and explained in a common language.
Meeting an Ambitious Goal Through Clearer Information
In 2016, leaders in Vermont set an ambitious workforce training goal for the state: 70% of residents will hold a postsecondary credential of value — including degrees, diplomas, certificates, and apprenticeships — by 2025. According to Advance Vermont, 80% of high-pay, high-demand jobs in the state require a credential of value, and 66% of jobs require postsecondary education or training. Advance Vermont advocates for credential transparency as a way to increase equity in educational attainment for all Vermonters, while strengthening connections among education, training, and employment.
To help meet the attainment goal, Advance Vermont collaborated with education providers, nonprofits, state government, and other community stakeholders to develop MyFutureVT, an interactive portal that serves as a career and education resource hub for learners and jobseekers.
The ongoing credential collection and publishing initiative, known as the Vermont Credential Transparency Project (VCTP), utilizes the CTDL and Credential Engine’s technical infrastructure to ensure that credential information is available as linked open data. This work aligns with the High Value Credentials for New England initiative, a regional credential transparency initiative created by the New England Board of Higher Education.
Advance Vermont is continuing to build support from Vermont government leaders as it works to meet the state’s goals for credential transparency and beyond.
How Vermont Identifies High-Value Credentials
As part of the VCTP initiative, Advance Vermont has created a credential inventory process. The first step is meeting with education and training providers to determine what information they have readily available; look for gaps in data about credential programs that Vermonters might need; and identify opportunities for technical assistance and support. Then Advance Vermont publishes the data to the Registry and MyFutureVT.
Who Benefits from Credential Transparency in Vermont?
Advance Vermont recognizes that all stakeholders prosper when information about credentials is clear, accurate, and standardized:
- Individuals: It empowers students and workers in Vermont to find the credential that works best for them and their education and career goals.
- Policymakers: It informs both state legislators and departmental leaders in Montpelier as they make decisions about workforce development and education policies.
- Employers: It equips Vermont’s hiring managers and C-suites with increased knowledge of the credential options, which can lead to new partnerships with education and training providers and make more informed hiring decisions.
- Education and training providers: It allows universities, colleges, and training providers in the state to make smarter decisions about the programs they offer and how they deliver them to opportunity seekers.
